If you’ve read any YA book blogs in the last three months or so, you’ve probably seen a stunning review of Veronica Roth’s debut: Divergent. Trust me, Divergent is so worth all the hype. I screamed like a maniac when I got my signed copy from a friend. Definitely on the top 5 of my favorite dystopian books of all time.
It was sort of like a combo of Uglies by Scott Westerfeld and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, but don’t worry, it was completely original. Beatrice, the main character must chose a faction to devote her life to, but choosing isn’t always easy. Factions include Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. She’s dangerous. She’s different. And she’s Divergent!
*spoilers* I am warning you aren’t I?
She chose Dauntless! This shocks everyone, even herself. Her family is torn about this because her brother has also chosen a different faction. Being Dauntless isn’t easy and not everyone can make the initiation especially competing against the Dauntless-born for the top ten rankings. It’s even worse when everyone considers her a Stiff because of her old faction. But, Tris is determined to prove them that she has what it takes. She makes a few friends, but also manages to make a few enemies; all ready to do whatever it takes to be on top.
I love Tris and her character. Doesn’t the book world need more butt-kicking girls? I understand her and she’s easy to relate to, given her situation. Plus the romance is so cute! I won’t tell you who, but I love him. Drool-worthy! She also uncovers more secrets about herself and her faction because everything is not as it seems. I didn’t really like how it ended but I am eagerly waiting to read Insurgent, the next book in the trilogy. Divergent was not what I expected. No, it was so much more and I couldn’t help but run into surprises everywhere I went. And managed to reread it three times before I bought another copy so no one else could ruin my signed one. Trust me; pick up a copy of Divergent, you won’t regret it.
